His major works include The Malay Archipelago (1869), On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection (1858), and Darwinism: An Exposition of the Theory of Natural Selection with Some of Its Applications (1889). His fields of specialization were biology, biogeography, anthropology, and geography.
